Global Child & Youth Road Safety 2026 Research Mini-Grant

AAAM’s Global Child & Youth Road Safety Special Interest Group announces a new $5,000 (USD) mini-grant for 2026 research projects.

Criteria

The grant’s purpose is to support research on the road safety of children and youth, including child passengers in vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and other modes of transportation. AAAM is a multidisciplinary community; we are looking for and strongly encourage collaborations and interdisciplinary submissions.

The published work and (where possible) the dataset will be made available with the support of AAAM. The target is to present the project at the 2026 AAAM Annual Conference in Costa Rica (e.g., short communication, late breaking oral only, or poster presentation). Additional support for travel costs will be provided.

Research activities are to be conducted from January to October 2026.

A $5,000 grant will be awarded to the chosen proposal to support research costs.

Topics in this domain are many and varied; we do not wish to impose limitations, but here are some examples that may be interesting and possible to complete with the limited time and budget available:

  • A scoping review of the legislation, regulatory, and enforcement frameworks in place to support child road safety – supported by interviews or focus groups.
  • A knowledge, attitudes, and practices survey on child road safety in a Low-Middle Income Country (LMIC) or specific cultural/geographic area.
  • An analysis of law enforcement and/or health system data relative to child road safety.
  • A real-world evaluation of the effectiveness of child road safety public awareness campaigns in an LMIC or specific cultural/geographic area, measuring changes in knowledge, attitudes, and self-reported behaviors.

Format:

Project proposals should be no longer than three (3) pages (including pictures and/or figures) and typewritten in Calibri 11 font in PDF or DOC format.

Please structure your proposal as follows and use the headings:

  • Author and Research Team Members’ Names
  • Rationale and Literature Review
  • Aims and Objectives
  • Research Design and Methods
  • Ethical Considerations
  • Budget and Timeline of Activities (NOTE: Indirect costs are not allowable)
  • Impact of Research and Dissemination Plans

Who Should Apply:

Researchers with their teams (we strongly encourage collaborations and interdisciplinary submissions).

At least one (1) research team member must be an AAAM member. Submissions from LMICs are strongly encouraged. For membership information, click here.

How to Submit:

Submit your proposal to the form below.

We will not accept email submissions.

All proposals are due by November 23rd at 11:59 p.m. CT.

Please Note: Applicants may submit proposals for any of the three available mini-grants offered by AAAM; however, individuals or groups are eligible to receive funding for only one grant.

Evaluation of the Proposals:

Reviews will be conducted in December 2025 by dedicated committee members of the Global Child & Youth Road Safety Special Interest Group.

The winning proposal will be announced no later than January 6th, 2026, with the expectation of beginning research in January 2026.

Proposals relevant to the child/youth road safety context, seem feasible within the given timeframe and budget, and well-grounded in existing evidence will be reviewed favorably. However, we appreciate that there is sometimes limited evidence for children, especially from LMICs, and the context is unique in many ways. If you feel unable to ground your proposal in evidence, you should clearly justify this in your rationale.
