Low- and Middle-Income Country 2026 Research Mini-Grant
AAAM’s Low- and Middle-Income Country Special Interest Group announces a $5,000 (USD) mini-grant for 2026 research projects on impaired driving
Criteria
The grant’s purpose is to support research on the impacts of and ways to mitigate impaired driving via real-world data collection in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC). AAAM is a multidisciplinary community; we are looking for and strongly encourage collaborations and interdisciplinary submissions.
The published work and (where possible) the dataset will be made available with the support of AAAM. The target is to present the project at the 2026 AAAM Annual Conference in Costa Rica (e.g., short communication or poster presentation).
Research activities are to be conducted from January to October 2026.
A $5,000 grant will be awarded to the chosen proposal to support research costs.
Topics in this domain are many and varied; we do not wish to impose limitations, but here are some examples that may be interesting and possible to complete with the limited time and budget available:
- A scoping review of the legislation, regulatory, and enforcement frameworks in place to mitigate impaired driving in an LMIC – supported by interviews or focus groups.
- A knowledge, attitudes, and practices survey on impaired driving in an LMIC.
- An analysis of law enforcement and/or health system data relative to impaired driving in an LMIC.
- Using decision-focused evaluation techniques to assess the policies and data available from a heavy truck company on impaired driving in an LMIC.
- A real-world evaluation of the effectiveness of anti-impaired driving public awareness campaigns in an LMIC, measuring changes in knowledge, attitudes, and self-reported behaviors.
Format:
Project proposals should be no longer than three (3) pages (including pictures and/or figures) and typewritten in Calibri 11 font in PDF or DOC format. Project proposals are required to be structured around the proposal template. Please structure your proposal using this template. Make sure your project proposal includes a budget and timeline of activities (NOTE: Indirect costs are not allowable).
Who Should Apply:
Researchers with their teams (we strongly encourage collaborations and interdisciplinary submissions).
At least one (1) research team member must be an AAAM member AND working in a Low-Middle Income Country to be studied. For membership information, click here.
How to Submit:
Submit your proposal to the form below.
We will not accept email submissions.
All proposals are due by November 23rd at 11:59 p.m. CT.
Evaluation of the Proposals:
Reviews will be conducted in December 2025 by dedicated committee members of the Low-Middle Income Countries Special Interest Group.
The winning proposal will be announced no later than January 6th, 2026, with the expectation of beginning research in January 2026.
Proposals relevant to the LMIC context, seem feasible within the given timeframe and budget, and well-grounded in existing evidence will be reviewed favorably. However, we appreciate that there is limited evidence from LMICs, and the context is unique in many ways. If you feel unable to ground your proposal in evidence, you should clearly justify this in your rationale.
