The Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM) is proud to announce that our President-Elect, Associate Professor Sjaan Koppel, PhD, has been honored with the 2024 Australasian College of Road Safety (ACRS) Women in Road Safety Award. This esteemed recognition highlights Sjaan’s significant contributions to road safety research and advocacy, particularly in protecting vulnerable road users such as older adults and children.
Sjaan, a leading researcher at Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) since 2004, heads the Behavioural Safety Science team and has played a vital role in shaping road safety policy and practice. Her advocacy for women in road safety and her mentorship have made a lasting impact on the global safety community.
As Sjaan prepares to assume the role of AAAM President, her dedication and expertise will help guide the organization’s mission to reduce road traffic injuries through education, public policy, and scientific research. Reflecting on her award, Sjaan remarked, “It’s essential that our voices are heard, our expertise valued, and our contributions recognised.”
